Canal House - Gilleleje, Denmark
Kanalhuset (Canal House) occupies a prime waterfront position in Gilleleje, Denmark — a town defined by its traditional fishing harbor and strong coastal identity. Completed in 2021 as the final phase of the ambitious Kulturhavn Gilleleje (Cultural Harbour) development, the building brings together retail, care facilities, and 20 owner-occupied apartments across three floors. The architects designed the project with the surrounding harbor character firmly in mind, creating a mixed-use building that feels rooted in its place while meeting a thoroughly contemporary standard of living - residents to the east and south enjoy sweeping views across Søborg Canal, the harbor, and the beach.
For the façade, TCShingle Classic ceramic cladding was a natural fit. Its distinctive profile evokes the weathered timber cladding of traditional Danish coastal structures — boathouses, fishermen's sheds, harbor warehouses — while delivering the durability and low maintenance that a waterfront environment demands. The Classic Shingle brings texture and depth to the building's exterior, grounding it in the vernacular of Gilleleje's harbor heritage without sacrificing the clean, refined quality the project deserved as the capstone of Kulturhavn Gilleleje.
